Free Web Hosting (and mostly ad-free)

Since I've spent some good hours examining free web hosts, I thought I'd collect the better ones here. None of these have stupid gimmicks like posting in their forums or earning credits.

Note: Any of these that I've actually used will be stated in the description, so you can see an example if one's available. I'm also using this page for my own future reference.

Also, I am not affiliated with any of the free sites mentioned here. Scan to the bottom for the non-free site I am affiliated with.

Stats key: Good Feature / Normal Feature or Unknown / Negative Feature

Free Domain Hosting
Useful if you've bought a domain name with someone else but you don't have a web site which can host it. Most if not all paid hosts can host your domain, it's just slightly rare to find a free host that will, so I'm listing the non-crappy ones I found here.

Note: No web sites accept free .tk domains, because you are not really in control of the domain. Free .tk domains just forward to a new site and mask the address bar. Also I'm not a big fan of .tk domains. (If you're just looking to buy a domain, I suggest Netfirms, whom I use as well)

50webs.com This is the best domain host you can get without paying, I think.

Stats: 60mb Space / Unlimited Bandwidth / No Ads! / Domain Hosting

atspace Ok, so they have a rather confusing web site and file manager, but the stats make up for it.

(The future host of my future personal web site. I will provide a link when it's online.)

Stats: 50mb Space / Unlimited Bandwidth / No Ads! / Domain Hosting

XR4Free If you have a small web site, this is great. If not, you'll run out of bandwidth pretty fast if you get many visitors. (By "small" I also mean small file size, and of course if it's text only you'll never run out)

(The future host of a web site I'm making about "how to take the bus". This is because the site will be small and efficient, so bandwidth is of little concern. A link will be provided when it's online.)

Stats: 40mb Space / 500mb Bandwidth / No Ads! / Domain Hosting

Netfirms You might be able to tell that this is my favourite host for non-free sites and also domains. Their free hosting, however, is good but not the best.

(The host for the original Flyborg.net, until I upgraded to their paid hosting)

Stats: 25mb Space / 1 GB Bandwidth / Some sort of ad (can't remember) / Domain Hosting

Aushost This host has some special rules: No blog or family sites, and you must have a domain name.

Stats: 50mb Space / 500mb Bandwidth / No Ads! / Domain Hosting Only

pg.gs It's a good thing they (apparently) allow domain hosting, because who wants a www.whatever.po.gs URL? Web site must also be applied for.

Stats: 150mb Space / 2GB Bandwidth / No Ads! / Domain or www.whatever.po.gs (Great if you have a site about Pogs I suppose...)

memebot.com A friendly little web host for rather small web sites.

Stats: 10mb Space / 100mb Bandwidth / No Ads! / Domain Hosting

Orgfree Free domain hosting, but ad supported, and they claim to have unlimited bandwidth, but there's a 500mb/day limit. They say that if you have a quality site and you need more you can just tell them and they'll fix it.

Stats: 200mb Space / Choice Of Ads / "Unlimited" Bandwidth / Domain or Sub-Domain Hosting / 2mb file size limit (not a problem for many sites)

Orgfree They also have a sub-domain-only hosting plan, which I may as well mention here.

Stats: 50mb Space / No Ads! / 5mb A Day Bandwidth / Your URL: www.whatever.noads.biz (Instead of biz you can also choose info, de, or ws)

Profuse Hosting Apparently you need an "actively updated" web site for this host. I wouldn't upload anything you haven't backed up somewhere, in case they delete it. They don't specify how "active" active is, but they suggest news updates and so forth as what they mean. They also have sub domain hosting. Again, these guys put an annoying banner on your page.

Stats: 1GB Space / Unlimited Bandwidth / Banner Ad / Domain or Sub domain Hosting / Must Be "Active"

Free Sub-Domain Hosting
Most free hosts give you a horrible URL like www.freehost.net.biz/free/abc/yourname/, but sub domain hosts give you something like www.yourname.freehost.com, which looks a little better. Also, these here are ad free (I think).

95mb Not only are the stats good, but their domain is nice and short and doesn't look too dumb as part of your URL. The only problem is they don't say "no ads", they say "no banner or text ads" so they may put up pop ups, which is worse. I have yet to check.

Stats: 95mb Space / Unlimited Bandwidth / (Ads?) / Your URL: www.whatever.95mb.co

Sitesled Cool URL, except there are no W's (http://whatever.sitesled.com). I can't remember if these guys need to manually review your application or not, but unless you're planning to make a crappy site or cheat them than that shouldn't be a problem.

(The future host of my "web design" web site, assuming they don't kick me off for not putting it up fast enough.)

Stats: 100mb Space / 3GB Bandwidth / No Ads! / Your URL: http://whatever.sitesled.com

eatj.com I assume your domain would be www.whatever.eatj.com, but I haven't tried. (Their paid plans are terrible, by the way. $70/month for 50GB bandwidth? Netfirms offers $10/month for 750GB bandwidth...)

Stats: 50mb Space / 3GB Bandwidth / (No ads? They don't say) / Your URL: They don't say.

Paid Hosting

Would you like to buy a vacuum cleaner ma'am? It'll only be moment of your time. *wedging foot in door*

I'm only mentioning one paid host; the one I'm using now, and will continue to use; Netfirms.

This is my own personal opinion. They have not bribed me to say this. I have become an affiliate though, so if you're considering Netfirms I would be overjoyed with glee if you used my link on this page to go to their site. If I didn't like Netfirms, I would be using a different host!

Netfirms This is the host of Flyborg.net, and for good reason. When Flyborg.net first upgraded from free to paid hosting, I liked their 10GB bandwidth for $5/month, but that plan has now been upgraded to 300GB bandwidth for the same price. I upgraded from the old 10GB to the old 100GB plan, but that has now been upgraded to a whopping 750GB. I never had to upgrade in the first place!

To sum up their service; I've never seen what appears to be a "budget host" offer so much for so little. I assume they stay in business because they have so many people hosting with them and recommending them. The bandwidth they offer is just rediculous, and they still have a full function control panel, and ftp access etc.

They also have many useful tools like various web stats and charts, and the ability to install things like forums and stores and blogs (not all of them useful for an experienced webmaster, but they can't hurt). You even get free domain names for as long as you're subscribed to their "advantage" or "business" plan. They support several advanced technologies like MySQL etc, and I haven't noticed any downtime either. They also have .htaccess so you can use custom 404 errors, and can password protect your folders. I've never had any problems with Netfirms either. Here's the stats:

A Note About Domains

I use Netfirms for most of my domain hosting (I have a bunch, you see. Domains are "neat").

Why not GoDaddy.com, you ask? Everyone loves GoDaddy! ... not me. Let me take this moment to make fun of GoDaddy. It's not just that I don't like their web site, or that they try and push useless things on you during checkout, or even that their domain names aren't as cheap as people think they are. I don't even mind that they seem to be aiming their ads at people that don't know what they're buying. I think it was the fake urgency emails that got me. You see, when your domain needs to be renewed, they'll start sending you urgent emails with big red letters about how you need to hurry up or you're screwed. They also seem to have made up some sort of rule that if you don't pay in time, they have to make your domain available for a period of time, during which you may not buy it back.

Let's look at a chart, shall we?

Cheesy, tricky, confusing, and almost condescending web site which doesn't just get to the point?

*Actually it's 4.95 for one domain, 9.95 for more.

Personally, I'm sticking with Netfirms, until such time as they succumb to the dark side.
